Dear Families,
October was a busy, fun month for our class. Thank you again for the wonderful Halloween Party donations. Thanks to all who volunteered and to Kelly O'Sullivan, our Room Parent who did a great job!
I look forward to seeing you all at your child's student-led conference. It is so valuable to have the opportunity to discuss their progress.
Math
The students are starting to see progress with their multiplication facts. I appreciate that you are encouraging your child to review Fact Triangles nightly. Our goal is for students to build an understanding of the multiplication/division connection as they review their facts.
Unit Four began our study of decimals through the thousandths. We will review and extend basic concepts of decimals. Please review the unit parent letter for more detailed information.
Thursday morning Math Club has been well attended and seems to bolster students' confidence.
Language Arts- Writing Workshop
The students are anxious to share their Realistic Fiction stories at their conference. The time and effort they put into the stories is remarkable. It was so valuable to conference numerous times with each child.
Students enjoyed sharing their story with the class and receiving positive feedback from each other.
Reading Workshop
The students continue to challenge themselves with "just right " book choices. I am encouraging them to explore other genres. Each day the students reflect in their reading notebook. This may be a vocabulary/skills lesson or and activity the checks their understanding of a particular story element.
We recently began a new read aloud, The City of Ember. As with our previous books, that I have read aloud, it offers the opportunity for discussions. Students make connections, visualize settings of the story and draw inferences.
Science and Social Studies
In the area of Science we are finishing up our unit on Energy, The kids loved the many experiments they completed investigating forms of energy and how they can be converted.
We were fortunate to have a presentation on safety and electrical energy by Jeff Quirk from CMP last week. This week presenters from the Chewonki Foundation will visit to share information on renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. They will have several hands on stations for the kids to explore.
I will be in touch with updates on our December plans. Thank you for all your input and helpful comments in your child's Homework Book. I look forward to seeing you and your child, at their conference over the next few weeks.
Please stay in touch. Charlotte
